About Us
Since our founding in 2018, Plays in Place has collaborated with diverse cultural institutions to develop and produce new site-specific plays. Our plays engage audiences with places and stories of overlooked or often-forgotten people. We explore and participate in grounding cultural identity, rooted in place and community.
We’ve created theatre for historic churches, iconic cemeteries, New England meeting houses, house museums, and the Senate Chamber of the Massachusetts State House.
We work closely with our non-profit institutional partners to understand the needs that bring them into collaboration with us. We have a multi-phase process that ensures the plays we create serve the stories, ideas, and resources of our partners. We bring a talented and experienced team of theater professionals to create plays that illuminate or enrich spaces.
When audiences experience our work, they find new meaning in the places, topics, and people at the heart of our plays.
Plays in Place proudly received the 2025 Excellence in Consulting Award from the National Council on Public History.
Plays in Place & our project partner MassBike received the 2026 Katherine T. “Kittie” Knox Award from The League of American Bicyclists for our work on The Kittie Knox Plays.
