On May 18, 1781, a group of Loyalist prisoners rushed up a 35-foot ladder, overpowered guards, killing one of them, and escaped into the night. Was it a carefully planned act of bravery by political prisoners, or a desperate, violent blow by criminals aided by inside actors?

Prison trustee Captain John Forward interrogates guards and recaptured prisoners to try to find the answers. One thing is certain—someone is lying.
